The Future of Energy is Solar

On May 21, 2014 the U.S. Department of Energy announced that it awarded $10 million to be split between six new research and development projects focused on concentrating solar power (CSP). CSP is a way to harness and store the sun’s energy to use that power even when the sun isn’t shining. These projects use less storage material, which cuts the overall costs.

Essentially this is important because it means that the federal government is using more money to research even more sustainable methods for the utilization of solar energy.

The Department of Energy released 2014: The Year of Concentrating Solar Power this month. The report talks about the different CSP plants that will be up and fully operational by the end of this year. Out of the five different funded plants three are located in California and one in Arizona.

In order for the United States to clearly shift to sustainable, clean energy for all households and businesses we need to make sure that we’re using the sun’s energy to its fullest capacity.

Although there is still more research and time needed to be invested into concentrating solar power, this money give more hope to the idea that solar energy will one day be the main source of power for the country.
